6 misconceptions about conception

Avoiding urination after intercourse and women lying down for an hour after intimacy to increase chances of conception are misunderstandings.

Having intercourse twice a day during ovulation increases chances of conception.

This is one of the most common misconceptions about sex among couples trying to conceive. While timing is important, the frequency of intercourse doesn't need to be excessive. An egg released during ovulation survives for about 24 hours. On the other hand, sperm can live in the female reproductive tract for up to 72 hours. Couples hoping to conceive should maintain a relaxed mindset, emotional connection, and minimize stress.

Lying down for an hour after intercourse ensures successful conception.

Many women are advised to lie flat for an hour after intercourse to help "the sperm meet the egg." However, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that this significantly increases the chances of conception.

Avoid urinating after intercourse.

Some women believe they shouldn't urinate after intercourse because it might "wash away the sperm." This is a misconception. Urinating after intercourse does not affect the sperm's ability to reach the egg. This habit helps prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs), which are common in women. Women should avoid douching after intercourse as it disrupts the vaginal microbiome.

Intercourse at a specific time of day increases chances of conception.

There is no evidence that this affects the chances of conception. What matters is that intercourse aligns with the ideal timeframe for conception. The highest chance of an egg being fertilized by sperm is during intercourse 1-2 days before ovulation.

Certain positions increase the chances of conception.

Many people believe that some positions are better for conception, but no scientific studies have proven this. Sperm are designed to swim and reach the egg regardless of position. Couples should choose positions that are comfortable and maintain intimacy.

To increase the chances of natural conception, both men and women should avoid unhealthy habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Stress can easily disrupt the menstrual cycle, affecting ovulation. Couples trying to conceive should also maintain a healthy weight.

Semen leakage means conception is impossible.

A small amount of semen leaking from the vagina after intercourse is entirely natural. This doesn't mean the sperm hasn't reached its destination, and it doesn't reduce the chances of pregnancy.
