8 fruits that can help burn belly fat

Avocados, grapefruit, watermelon, apples, and raspberries can be valuable allies in burning belly fat, thanks to their high fiber content and metabolism-boosting properties.

Healthy eating means maintaining a balanced, consistent diet that includes protein, whole grains, vegetables, and fruits. Terry Tateossian, a registered dietitian nutritionist and certified personal trainer with the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA), explains that when combined with a balanced diet and strength training, fruit can aid post-workout recovery, stabilize blood sugar, reduce inflammation, and support hormonal balance.

"These fruits are effective because they have a low glycemic index, are rich in fiber, and contain many nutrients that support a healthy metabolism," adds the founder of THOR: The House of Rose, a wellness community for women over 40.

Here are 8 fruits Tateossian recommends adding to your diet to help reduce belly fat:

Grapefruit

Grapefruit isn't for everyone. Its tart and slightly bitter taste can be off-putting, but its health benefits might make you reconsider. According to Tateossian, grapefruit "contains compounds that can improve insulin sensitivity and help regulate blood sugar. This reduces fat storage around the midsection and naturally suppresses appetite."

Blueberries

Blueberries are sweet, juicy, and a perfect yogurt topping. Moreover, they are genuinely good for you. "Blueberries are rich in anthocyanins and antioxidants that help reduce inflammation and improve fat metabolism," says Tateossian. "Studies show they can help reduce belly fat even without major changes in calorie intake."

Apples

"Apples are rich in pectin fiber, which helps slow digestion, keeps you feeling full longer, and supports gut health—a key factor in reducing bloating and belly fat storage," explains Tateossian.

Raspberries

Known for their distinctive sweet-tart flavor, raspberries can help with weight management. Tateossian says, "Raspberries are low in sugar, high in fiber, and packed with antioxidants that help improve insulin response and curb cravings."

Kiwis

Kiwis are also loved for their sweet and sour taste, offering a tropical and refreshing feel. They contain many essential nutrients that support overall health. "Kiwis are rich in vitamin C and actinidin (an enzyme that aids digestion), which helps reduce bloating and supports collagen production, which can improve skin elasticity during weight loss," says Tateossian.

Avocados

"Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fats, which help your body burn fat for energy while reducing visceral fat (the dangerous fat stored deep in the abdomen)," Tateossian shares.

Watermelon

Watermelon is the ultimate summer fruit, offering hydration and restoring energy. It can also help in the fight against belly fat. "Watermelon is hydrating and rich in the amino acid citrulline, which helps reduce water retention and improve blood circulation, making the stomach look flatter while supporting fat metabolism," says the nutritionist.

Strawberries

According to Tateossian, this delicious berry is great for weight loss goals. "Strawberries are naturally low in sugar but high in fiber (about 3 grams per cup), which helps you stay full, stabilizes blood sugar, and prevents the kind of snacking that leads to increased belly fat," she says. "They are also rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, which help fight inflammation and support collagen production for healthier skin as you lose weight."
