Dang Van Giang was brought to Hong Ngoc General Hospital by his family. He was experiencing intense back pain, struggling to stand upright, and unable to walk. He required assistance with all daily activities. Prior to this incident, he was healthy with no history of trauma or musculoskeletal issues. However, just two days earlier, a forceful sneeze at home resulted in sudden, sharp back pain and the loss of his mobility.
Following a clinical examination, Giang underwent an MRI and bone density scan. The results revealed a compression fracture of the L1 vertebra, severe osteoporosis, and lumbar spondylosis.

According to Dr. Trinh Tu Tam from the Department of Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology at Hong Ngoc General Hospital, due to Giang's severe osteoporosis, his bone structure was weakened. Even simple movements or actions like a forceful sneeze could cause a vertebral compression fracture. Untreated, this condition can lead to height loss, spinal curvature, and even disability.

After a multi-disciplinary consultation, doctors from the Department of Musculoskeletal and the Department of Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology performed vertebroplasty, injecting bio-cement into the fractured vertebra. This procedure helps restore the structure of the compressed vertebra, providing rapid pain relief and restoring mobility. Within an hour of the procedure, Giang could stand and walk unassisted.

"Vertebroplasty is only the first step in treating the compression fracture," said Dr. Tran Thi Kim Chuan from the Department of Musculoskeletal. "Managing the patient's severe osteoporosis is crucial to prevent recurrence and enhance the treatment's effectiveness."
Two weeks after the procedure, Giang received an infusion of Aclasta (Zoledronic Acid) to treat his osteoporosis. This medication inhibits bone resorption, strengthens bones, and reduces the risk of future vertebral compression fractures and other bone fractures. Doctors recommended annual infusions for at least 3-5 consecutive years, along with follow-up bone density scans after one and two years to assess recovery.
Dr. Chuan also recommended that individuals over 50, especially postmenopausal women, undergo osteoporosis screening at reputable medical facilities. If experiencing persistent pain in the lower back, shins, or forearms, patients should seek medical consultation instead of self-medicating to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment.
