Ho Chi Minh City adds mental health facility amid rising demand for examinations

Starting 1/7, the Ho Chi Minh City Psychiatric Hospital will operate its fourth facility in Binh Duong, helping to alleviate the treatment system as demand for examinations increases.

Tang Chi Thuong, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, stated that the new facility will initially focus on the examination, treatment, and management of psychiatric patients. This expansion aims to enhance service provision for residents following Ho Chi Minh City's administrative consolidation, which increased its population to over 14 million.

Facility 4 was previously repurposed for Covid-19 prevention and control efforts. After the pandemic, its technical infrastructure, equipment, and many structural elements deteriorated. Recently, the Ho Chi Minh City Psychiatric Hospital and other units urgently upgraded the facilities, added equipment, and prepared personnel. Currently, the necessary conditions for the initial phase of medical examinations and treatment are largely complete.

According to the plan, the initial phase will involve 48 medical staff at facility 4, including doctors, nurses, technicians, and support personnel. Among them, 13 experienced psychiatric doctors will directly oversee patient examinations, treatment, and monitoring.

"The team of specialized doctors deployed from the outset is expected to ensure treatment quality and build trust among patients and their families", Mr. Thuong shared.

Department of Health leaders stated that facility 4 will help alleviate the burden on existing Ho Chi Minh City Psychiatric Hospital facilities. It will also allow residents in Binh Duong and neighboring areas to access specialized services locally, reducing travel time and costs.

In recent years, the demand for mental healthcare in Vietnam has risen. Young people and urban populations commonly experience issues such as anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and prolonged stress. Expanding the multi-center treatment network is expected to ease the burden on the healthcare system and improve access to specialized services.
