Our kidneys are busy little filters, removing waste and maintaining fluid balance, so choosing the right drinks is crucial.
Some beverages can support kidney health, helping them efficiently filter waste and excess fluid from the body. These include:
Water
Not only free and readily available, water is also the most kidney-friendly beverage. It helps flush out toxins, supports blood circulation, and reduces the risk of kidney stones. It's the best drink for maintaining healthy kidneys.
However, staying hydrated doesn't mean blindly drinking 8 glasses a day. Water needs vary depending on individual factors, climate, and activity levels. Moderation is key, even with water.
Unsweetened plant-based milk
If you want a flavorful, kidney-healthy drink, plant-based milk is a good choice, especially if you're watching your potassium and phosphorus intake.
Unsweetened almond or coconut milk is lower in potassium and phosphorus and may be better for your kidneys than cow's milk, especially in the early stages of kidney disease.

Low-fat milk
Rich in calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, and potassium, low-fat cow's milk may slow the progression of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).
However, milk also contains potassium and phosphorus, so moderation is important.
Light, unsweetened coffee and green tea
Studies suggest that moderate black coffee consumption may reduce the risk of CKD. Just stick to under three cups a day and avoid sugary or creamy varieties.
Green tea, rich in antioxidants, may also slow kidney damage and help prevent stones, especially when consumed without additives.
Unsweetened juices
Some juices, such as unsweetened cranberry or apple juice, in moderation, can support urinary tract and kidney health and help prevent UTIs by inhibiting bacteria. They also provide kidney-friendly antioxidants. However, choose low- or no-sugar options for better overall health.
Coconut water and herbal teas
Coconut water is hydrating and low in minerals that burden the kidneys. Herbal teas, caffeine-free and rich in antioxidants, are gentle, hydrating options that can boost kidney function.
Lemon water and beet juice (occasional use)
Lemon water may help prevent calcium oxalate kidney stones due to its citrate content.
Beet juice can help lower blood pressure, which is good for kidney health, but it also contains oxalate, which can be risky for those prone to kidney stones.
