On 4/8, Dr. Dang Khai Toan, Deputy Head of General Surgery at Nhan Dan 115 Hospital, reported that an X-ray revealed a foreign object deep within the patient's rectum, impossible to remove through conventional methods or colonoscopy. Doctors had to perform surgery under general anesthesia to extract the mop handle.

According to Dr. Toan, the smooth surface of the mop handle, lacking any grip, allowed it to slip deep into the rectum, causing significant pain and difficulty in removal. Lack of understanding about anatomy and safe sex toy practices contributed to the incident.
Improper use of sex toys or insertion of non-specialized objects can lead to unforeseen complications. Bowel obstruction is a common risk, occurring when a foreign object lodges in the digestive system, causing severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and distension. Prolonged obstruction can lead to bowel perforation, peritonitis, or sepsis, which can be life-threatening.

Dr. Nguyen Quang Huy, Head of General Surgery, added that foreign objects can also damage the rectal lining and sphincter muscles, causing tears, bleeding, and potential long-term complications like fecal incontinence. The risk of infections, including rectal abscesses and systemic infections, is high if the object is unsanitary or remains lodged for an extended period. Such incidents can also cause psychological trauma, shame, anxiety, and diminished sexual health.
Doctors recommend using safe, standardized sex toys and avoiding non-specialized objects like bottles or homemade devices, which are unsuitable for the body and pose risks. Carefully research the origin and manufacturer when purchasing products, especially online. Seek immediate medical attention in case of an incident instead of attempting self-treatment, which can worsen the situation.
