New meningococcal vaccine available for adults 56 and older

A new generation MenACYW meningococcal vaccine, manufactured by Sanofi (France), previously for children 12 months and older, is now available for adults aged 56 and above.

The VNVC vaccination system introduced the MenACYW vaccine on 4/7. This is the fourth meningococcal vaccine available in Vietnam, protecting against four common serogroups: A, C, Y, and W-135. The vaccine utilizes modern protein-based technology with tetanus toxoid (TT), stimulating a strong and long-lasting immune response.

Doctor Bach Thi Chinh, Medical Director of the VNVC Vaccination System, stated this technology is particularly effective for young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Unlike previous vaccines limited to those 55 and younger, MenACYW can be administered to children from 12 months old with no upper age limit for adults. Approval for children as young as 6 weeks old is anticipated. The vaccine has been approved in over 70 countries and has been administered in nearly 40 countries since 2021.

"By eliminating many adverse factors, this new vaccine is safer and suitable for all ages, contributing to effective community protection in the context of increasing global trade and tourism," Dr. Chinh said.

Meningococcal bacteria are transmitted through the respiratory tract, with five common serogroups causing disease: A, B, C, Y, and W-135. Meningococcal disease affects both children and adults, primarily manifesting as meningitis and septicemia, resulting in over 135,000 deaths annually worldwide. Up to 50% of untreated cases are fatal. Among the few survivors, 10-20% face severe complications like hearing loss, blindness, limb amputation, and neurological disorders. Infants have a complication rate up to 50%.

In the first 6 months of 2025, Vietnam recorded dozens of meningococcal infections, including two deaths. Tracing the source of infection is difficult due to a large number of asymptomatic carriers in the community. In crowded environments like schools, dormitories, and industrial zones, the disease spreads rapidly and can easily cause outbreaks.

Currently, meningococcal vaccines are only available through private vaccination services. Vaccines target different serogroups: B, BC, and ACYW-135. Doctors determine the appropriate vaccine type and schedule based on vaccination history, epidemiological situation, age, and individual needs to ensure optimal protection.
