Ovarian tumor weighing nearly 5 kg

A 56-year-old woman, aware of an ovarian tumor for 10 years, did not follow up with check-ups until she felt an abnormality, leading to the discovery of a tumor over 20 cm, almost completely filling her abdomen.

On 12/9, Master of Science, Doctor Pham Thai Hien from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at An Sinh General Hospital, announced that the patient underwent surgery to remove the entire tumor, consisting of about 2,5 kg of tumor tissue and 2,5 liters of fluid, totaling nearly 5 kg. The patient also had both ovaries and fallopian tubes removed, and biopsy samples were sent for pathological examination. Pathology results are pending to determine the tumor's nature, which will guide further monitoring and treatment.

The patient had underlying conditions including hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and a history of cerebrovascular accident. According to Doctor Hien, because the tumor was over 20 cm, doctors performed open surgery to control and remove the entire lesion, minimizing the risk of rupture.

Ovarian tumors can develop silently, only causing compression, torsion, or rupture when they grow large. In older, post-menopausal women, ovarian abnormalities require thorough monitoring due to an age-related increase in malignancy risk.

Doctors recommend that women undergo regular gynecological examinations. If an ovarian tumor is detected, re-examination and close monitoring are necessary. Detecting and treating tumors while they are small limits the risk of complex surgery.
