Sai Gon Eye Hospital introduces myopia control service

Sai Gon Eye Hospital - Cach Mang Thang Tam, part of the Sai Gon Eye Hospital system, has launched a specialized "Myopia Control" service for children, partnering with parents to protect their children's vision.

According to Ministry of Health statistics, the rate of myopia in Vietnamese children is rapidly increasing, especially among elementary and middle school students. This is due to factors such as intense studying, lack of natural light, excessive use of electronic devices, and unhealthy lifestyle habits. Notably, many cases of myopia progress rapidly, increasing by 1-2 diopters annually, leading to the risk of dangerous eye complications in the future.

In response to this reality, the "Myopia Control" service at Sai Gon Eye Hospital - Cach Mang Thang Tam has invested in specialized personnel, equipment, and personalized treatment plans, aiming to provide parents and children with access to scientific, effective, and safe solutions.

Previously, the most common solution for myopia was measuring and prescribing a suitable pair of glasses. However, according to experts, this is a reactive solution that only helps children see clearly in the present but doesn't address the root cause of the problem: the abnormal elongation of the eyeball. This new service represents a shift in thinking from "correcting vision" to "controlling myopia."

Nguyen Huynh Yen Nhi, Head of Myopia Control at Sai Gon Eye Hospital - Cach Mang Thang Tam, stated that the hospital has developed personalized myopia control treatment plans based on several factors: current degree of myopia, rate of progression, biometric indicators including corneal curvature and axial length, along with risk factors such as genetics, study habits, and lifestyle. "Each child will have a customized monitoring and control plan. Parents are also thoroughly consulted about myopia control to support their children and contribute to effective treatment," said Dr. Nhi.

Speaking at the service launch, Dr. Tang Hong Chau, Director of Sai Gon Eye Hospital - Cach Mang Thang Tam, stated that good eyesight is not only a health factor but also an important foundation for developing thinking, emotions, and personality in young children. "Myopia control is not just about wearing glasses; it's a systematic treatment strategy based on close monitoring and timely intervention to minimize the increase in myopia," emphasized Dr. Chau. Therefore, the hospital has invested comprehensively in this service, from corneal topography and axial length measurement systems to assess risk and predict myopia progression in children, along with a highly specialized team to ensure optimal treatment outcomes.

In addition to treatment, Sai Gon Eye Hospital - Cach Mang Thang Tam also plans to implement communication programs and public education about the importance of myopia control. The hospital will also organize regular screenings in schools, providing training for teachers and parents on recognizing early signs of myopia, prevention methods, and ways to prevent its progression.
