Associate Professor, Doctor Tran Van Hinh, Head of Urology - Andrology Department at Tam Anh General Hospital Hanoi, noted Mr. Hiep's prostate was enlarged to approximately 38 g, nearly double its normal size. This enlargement compressed the urethra, obstructing urine flow. The condition could lead to acute urinary retention, urinary tract infections, and impact his quality of life.
Mr. Hiep underwent Rezum therapy, which uses high-temperature steam energy to selectively destroy enlarged prostate tissue. This process shrinks the gland and clears urine flow. The transurethral procedure involves spinal anesthesia, ensuring the patient experiences no pain.
Each steam injection lasts approximately 10 seconds, creating controlled lesions that cause pathological cells to gradually degenerate over several weeks. The entire procedure takes about 15 minutes. Unlike traditional surgery, Rezum does not require an incision, causes minimal bleeding, and avoids general anesthesia. This reduces the risk of complications, particularly for older individuals or those with underlying cardiovascular conditions, Associate Professor Hinh stated.
Mr. Hiep had a urinary catheter for approximately 3 to 5 days. He took prescribed medication and will have a follow-up appointment after two months for doctors to assess his improvement and prostate condition.

Associate Professor Hinh noted that Rezum therapy is a suitable option for prostate enlargement patients over 50 years old who experience moderate to severe symptoms or wish to avoid open surgery. Rezum also preserves physiological function and reduces retrograde ejaculation. The procedure is short, minimally impacts daily activities, and is beneficial for patients with multiple comorbidities.
Middle-aged men experiencing frequent urination, difficulty urinating, painful urination, or incomplete bladder emptying should seek early medical examination to detect prostate enlargement or related conditions.
