On 23/6, Cao Bang General Hospital reported a case of a 36-year-old woman who had been diagnosed with Basedow's disease (Graves' disease) a year prior. This autoimmune disorder causes the body to overproduce thyroid hormones, leading to hyperthyroidism affecting multiple organs.
Following a period of stable treatment, the patient discontinued her medication for three months without follow-up appointments. Her health deteriorated rapidly, marked by fatigue, hand tremors, heart palpitations, and persistent insomnia. She experienced significant weight loss due to poor appetite, leading to severe malnutrition.
Test results revealed severe hyperthyroidism coupled with non-specific chest pain, increasing the risk of a thyroid storm – a life-threatening complication. Doctors immediately prescribed antithyroid medication and heart rate control medication to stabilize her condition.
According to the treating physician, abruptly stopping medication caused a rapid increase in thyroid hormone levels, triggering dangerous complications such as heart rhythm disturbances, physical exhaustion, and metabolic disorders. This can be life-threatening if not promptly addressed.

Basedow's disease (Graves' disease) is a chronic endocrine disorder requiring long-term treatment, regular monitoring, and adjustments to the treatment plan as directed by a specialist. Patients must adhere to treatment guidelines, attend scheduled check-ups, and refrain from altering dosages or stopping medication without consulting their doctor. Adherence to treatment ensures effective disease management, prevents relapse, and minimizes the risk of serious complications.
