Why does hypothyroidism cause weight gain?

Three years ago, I had a goiter that was treated. Recently, I've gained weight rapidly, and the doctor said it's due to hypothyroidism after the goiter. Why does hypothyroidism cause weight gain? (Nguyet Chi, Tay Ninh)

Answer:

The thyroid gland produces hormones that control metabolism, helping the body's organs function normally. These hormones can affect a person's digestive system and appetite. Thyroid hormone also plays a role in metabolizing fat and converting stored calories into energy for the body.

Hypothyroidism slows down these metabolic processes. When thyroid function is impaired, the body stores more calories as fat because it is difficult to burn and metabolize them. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include unexplained weight gain, edema, low energy levels, easy fatigue, frequent sleepiness, and dry skin. Hypothyroidism slows the body's metabolism, altering the balance between calorie intake and expenditure, leading to rapid weight gain. Patients may also retain water and salt, which contributes to uncontrolled weight gain.

There are many causes of thyroid disorders, including abnormalities in the immune system, genetics, iodine deficiency, postpartum and menopause in women. People with a history of goiter, or those taking medication for arrhythmias, cancer, or psychiatric conditions are also prone to hypothyroidism.

Treatment for hypothyroidism depends on the symptoms and severity of the condition. Doctors may prescribe medication to restore normal thyroid function if abnormalities are detected. If thyroid cysts are present, patients may be treated with aspiration or ethanol injection through the skin. In cases of thyroid cancer, the thyroid gland may need to be removed.

Untreated thyroid disease can lead to more severe symptoms. You should consult a doctor specializing in endocrinology for examination, diagnosis, and timely treatment. To protect your thyroid, you should eat nutritious foods, exercise regularly, avoid smoking, limit alcohol consumption, get enough sleep, and reduce stress.
