Doctors at Can Tho City General Hospital activated a code red and requested an emergency consultation from Can Tho City Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital on the morning of 23/6.
After the patient was resuscitated and given a blood transfusion, the obstetrics team, including Dr. Ngo Van Dung, Deputy Director of Can Tho City Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, and Dr. Do Thi Minh Nguyet, manually removed the placenta, controlled uterine bleeding, and performed advanced suturing. Thanks to the timely intervention, the woman's condition stabilized, and she remains under observation at the hospital.
Her family explained that due to financial constraints, she had only one prenatal checkup during her pregnancy and chose a home birth to save money. When the placenta failed to deliver and bleeding continued, the family sought help from a nearby doctor, who then arranged for her transfer to the hospital. Upon arrival, she was in severe hemorrhagic shock, with unmeasurable blood pressure and a deep coma resulting from placental abruption and massive bleeding.

According to Dr. Nguyet, the risk of complications from unattended home births is very high. Common dangers include trauma, vaginal and perineal tears, retained placenta, postpartum hemorrhage, uterine atony, hemorrhagic shock, and postpartum infections. Newborns can also face complications like asphyxia, meconium aspiration, placental bleeding, birth injuries, hypothermia, and infections, especially conjunctivitis and pneumonia.
Expectant mothers should have regular prenatal checkups to detect any abnormalities early. They should maintain a balanced work and rest schedule, avoid overexertion and excessive stress, and consume a nutritious and varied diet. If any unusual signs appear, they should seek immediate medical attention.
