American director arrested for alleged tax evasion exceeding 3.2 billion VND

Stephen Ward Kim, an American citizen, is accused of exploiting tax exemptions on imported goods for processing to evade 3.2 billion VND in taxes.

Hanoi police announced on 4/8 that the Security Agency arrested Stephen Ward Kim, 64, for investigation of tax evasion.

According to the police, Durian Co., Ltd., located in Vat Lai commune (formerly Ba Vi district), is a wholly foreign-owned company represented by Kim. The company primarily imports raw materials to process into clothing for export under the temporary import and re-export model.

Kim allegedly exploited the tax exemption policy on imported goods intended for processing and re-export. He is accused of falsifying information on export declarations regarding tax-exempt and non-taxable items.

In total, he allegedly evaded over 3.2 billion VND in taxes.
