Chef sentenced to life for murdering colleague

After his colleague repeatedly refused offers of beer, 24-year-old Nguyen The Kiet bought knives and stabbed him to death.

On 3/7, Kiet, from Ben Tre, was sentenced to life in prison by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court for murder. He was also ordered to pay the victim's family over 314 million VND.

The court stated that Kiet's actions were thuggish and caused particularly serious consequences, necessitating a strict sentence.

Kiet, Vinh, and Cuong were chefs at a restaurant in District 5. On the evening of 20/2/2024, Cuong held a birthday party at a local restaurant, inviting Kiet, Vinh, and several other friends. During the party, Kiet repeatedly offered Vinh beer, but Vinh declined each time.

Feeling slighted, Kiet argued with Vinh, but others intervened. Kiet then left, bought two knives, and waited for Vinh to leave the party to take revenge.

Early the next morning, as Vinh and a friend left the restaurant, Kiet rushed towards them. Vinh's friends tried to stop him, but Vinh then attacked Kiet. Kiet retaliated by stabbing Vinh in the back. Vinh ran a short distance before collapsing. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he died from his injuries.

In court, Kiet expressed remorse, admitting he lost control and caused a grave outcome. He apologized to the victim's family and asked the court for leniency.
