Security footage shows the man initially arguing with a female employee about an order from 2021. "You forgot my sausage," he said. "Four years ago, I ordered an egg sandwich, but you gave me eggplant. I don't like eggplant; it makes my stomach hurt." The brothers offered the man a sausage, a $3 refund for the previous mistake, and asked him to leave. However, the disgruntled customer pulled out a knife and attacked them.
Abed Assad recognized the customer from 2021 and said he had visited the deli a few days earlier looking for the brothers. They were too busy to speak with him at the time.
