Driver detained after fatal crash on Vinh Hao - Phan Thiet expressway

Tran Van Cuong, accused of "inattention and speeding," rear-ended a stopped bus on the Vinh Hao - Phan Thiet expressway, resulting in three fatalities.

On 9/7, 42-year-old Cuong, from Dak Lak, was detained by Lam Dong provincial police for "Traffic violations."

Around 11:45 PM, Cuong was driving a Nhu Y 78 sleeper bus from Phu Yen to Ho Chi Minh City on the Vinh Hao - Phan Thiet expressway. Near Hamlet 2, Ham Liem Commune, Lam Dong Province, investigators say his inattention and speeding led him to rear-end a Thien Tri sleeper bus (formerly registered in Ninh Thuan) that had stopped in the same lane due to a mechanical issue.

The impact fused the front of Cuong's bus to the rear of the Thien Tri bus. The three victims were Le Pham Anh Vu, 40, (the Thien Tri driver), Trinh Gia Bao, 16, (the Thien Tri assistant), and Phan Kim Thanh, 25, (the Nhu Y 78 assistant).

Both vehicles sustained significant damage. Nearly 40 passengers from the two buses were injured and taken to Binh Thuan General Hospital. Most were discharged by midday.
