According to initial investigations, at approximately 3 AM on 23/8/2023, two Danish tourists, Andreas Myrup (24) and William Trollund (23), hired Toan and Cau for motorbike taxi rides to their hotel in Tra Que village, Hoi An Tay ward.
Noticing Toan and Cau transporting the tourists, Quang, Tai, and Duc followed on motorbikes, awaiting an opportunity to steal the tourists' property.
Upon reaching the hotel, Andreas Myrup took out his wallet to pay the fare. Toan shined a flashlight directly into the wallet, temporarily blinding Andreas, then took all 540,000 Vietnamese dong without returning the agreed-upon change.
While his companion requested to exchange money, Andreas checked his wallet, discovered money was missing, and demanded Toan return it. Toan only returned 500,000 dong. Believing the total amount lost was 5 million dong, the tourist argued with the group of drivers.
At this point, Tai and Duc approached, holding a wooden stick approximately 60 cm long. They threatened and shouted loudly, forcing the two tourists to flee into the hotel.
The group then left the scene, proceeding to the An Hoi bridge area where they divided the stolen money.
The incident occurred in August 2023 and the investigation was previously suspended. After reviewing and consolidating the case file, the Criminal Police Department of Da Nang City Police gathered sufficient evidence to prosecute and temporarily detain the five suspects.
