Gay millionaire couple jointly charged with child sexual abuse

Barrie Drewitt-Barlow and his husband, a millionaire football club owner, accused of child rape, assault, and sexual exploitation.

Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, 57, and his second husband, Scott Drewitt-Barlow, 32, were arrested during a raid on their home in Danbury, Essex, on 6/5. The couple appeared in court last week facing multiple charges, including rape, sexual assault, and modern slavery. Essex police announced additional charges on 22/6. The defendants remain in custody, with a further hearing scheduled for 7/9 and the full trial commencing on 18/1 next year.

Specifically, Barrie faces 15 additional charges, including: two counts of sexual activity with a child, two counts of paying for a child's sexual services, five counts of rape, four counts of sexual assault, causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, and causing or inciting sexual activity.

His husband, Scott, faces two further charges of rape and one charge of causing or inciting sexual activity.

Offenses targeting boys

Barrie is a property tycoon with an estimated fortune of 200 million USD. He owns Maldon & Tiptree football club and several other overseas businesses.

During the recent hearing, the prosecutor alleged the couple "targeted young males". "They could be described as celebrities, living a millionaire lifestyle, having appeared in numerous documentaries and reality TV shows," the prosecutor stated. They allegedly used their fame to "recruit, befriend and entice victims, inviting them to their home and other properties owned by them" to commit offenses.

In 1999, Barrie and his first husband, Tony, were recognized as "Britain's first gay fathers" after using a surrogate. At the time, they gained prominence for their court battle to have both their names on their children's birth certificates. Barrie and Tony became the first gay male couple in the UK permitted to do so. Previously, both had children from prior marriages.

In 2019, Barrie again made headlines by separating from Tony and marrying Scott, his daughter's boyfriend.
