The previous afternoon, Tran Quoc Thien visited his younger sister, Tran Thi Duc, 63, at her home in Chanh Hoa village, Cat Tien commune. He discovered multiple burn marks on the house walls, corrugated iron roof, and dry grass, along with charred remains of family members, prompting him to report the incident to authorities.
During the examination, authorities determined that four family members had died earlier: Ms. Duc; her daughter, Tran Thi Cao, 37; and her two twin sons, who were in 9th grade.
The house where the incident occurred is approximately 50 square meters, located in a sparsely populated area, about 100 meters from the nearest neighbor. There were no signs of fire spreading or other abnormalities outside.
According to local authorities, Ms. Cao worked as a factory worker near her home. After her divorce, she moved back with her two children to live with her mother. Ms. Duc farmed and cared for her two grandchildren. The family was classified as impoverished.
