Man sought after allegedly absconding with 80 billion VND from high-interest scheme

Nguyen Huy Dat is accused of borrowing over 80 billion VND from multiple individuals for "bank refinancing" purposes, promising high interest before allegedly fleeing.

An Giang provincial police issued a search warrant on 20/5 for Nguyen Huy Dat, 50, to investigate allegations of property appropriation fraud. Dat is accused of absconding with over 80 billion VND after promising high returns on investments.

Police investigations revealed that from 6/2025 to 2/2026, Dat approached numerous individuals. He claimed to have clients who urgently needed funds for bank refinancing and pledged to repay the principal with high interest within a few days.

Trusting his promises, 7 individuals provided Dat with a total of over 80 billion VND. Initially, Dat maintained their confidence by consistently repaying both the principal and promised interest.

However, by 12/2025, Dat's pattern changed. He reportedly informed lenders that he was refinancing a 20 billion VND loan and was "stuck for capital", promising repayment once the funds were disbursed. Subsequently, he cut off all contact and left the locality.

Dat's current whereabouts remain unknown. The investigating agency has appealed to the public, urging anyone who locates him or possesses relevant information to contact the police immediately.
