According to the indictment, in the early morning of 30/4, Hanh sought revenge. She believed her neighbors, Vo Thi Anh Hong and Bui Thi Thu Thuy, had cursed and insulted her honor.
While those around were sleeping, Hanh poured approximately 2 liters of alcohol from a plastic bottle onto the iron door of Thuy and Hong's house, then ignited it with a gas lighter.
Thuy and her husband, Luu Van Hien, discovered the fire. They opened the door, ran outside shouting for help, and began to extinguish the flames. While Hien fought the fire, Hanh approached him, splashed alcohol on his body, and then returned home.
Hien sustained burns to his hands, feet, face, neck, chest, and abdomen, resulting in a 16% injury rate.
The fire also scorched the iron door of Hong and Thuy's house.
