Police initially noticed Vu's frequent Zalo posts advertising used motorcycles at low prices. A search of Vu’s residence revealed 12 motorcycles with signs of altered license plates and tampered vehicle identification numbers. He confessed to buying the motorcycles from Viet and Thuan.
Expanding their investigation, police questioned suspected thieves Phuc and 38-year-old Le Van Tinh. Phuc admitted to successfully stealing 20 motorcycles with accomplices, selling them for 5-6 million dong each. Thuan then purchased used license plates from scrap yards, altered the VINs, attached the new plates, and resold the motorcycles at low prices. Motorcycles with proper documentation commanded higher prices.
