On 26/7, Loi and his current girlfriend, 16-year-old Bui Tieu My, were detained by Dong Nai police for investigation of murder and other potential offenses.

Investigations revealed Loi and his 21-year-old ex-girlfriend, originally from Ca Mau, had an online dispute. On the evening of 22/7, the victim texted Loi to meet and discuss the issue at Ben San Hamlet, Nhon Trach Commune.

The victim, accompanied by 25-year-old Ngo Tuan Cuong carrying a 50 cm iron bar and a group of friends, arrived at the agreed location, not a restaurant as initially reported. Loi was waiting with his current girlfriend, Bui Tieu My, and her 35-year-old mother, Pham Bao Trang.

As the victim approached and grabbed Loi's collar, he stabbed her multiple times in the abdomen. She died at the scene. Cuong threw the iron bar at Loi, who then stabbed him, causing serious injuries. Loi and My fled the scene.

Police apprehended Loi while he was hiding in his hometown in An Giang.
