Yesterday morning, the driver reported being "carjacked" while transporting three male passengers on DT744 road, from Phu An ward to Tay Nam ward. He claimed the passengers strangled him with a cord and stole his car about 2 km from the Tay Nam ward People's Committee office.
Tay Nam ward police, in collaboration with the TP HCM Criminal Investigation Department, immediately investigated the scene and reviewed nearby security camera footage. However, their findings revealed inconsistencies in the driver's statement. Police located and interviewed the passengers, confirming they had not threatened or attacked the driver.
When questioned, the driver was initially evasive but eventually confessed to fabricating the robbery, admitting he had hidden the taxi elsewhere. He attributed his false report to "life pressures and emotional instability."
Police are investigating his motives.
According to the TP HCM Criminal Investigation Department, false reports of crimes, incidents, and accidents have recently increased, significantly impacting law enforcement operations and public order. Such actions disrupt public order, waste resources, and erode public trust in authorities.
Providing false information about cases to authorities can result in administrative fines from 2 to 15 million VND. In more serious cases, criminal charges can be filed, with penalties of up to 7 years imprisonment depending on the severity.
