Thien dropped out of school after grade 9 and lived with his parents at his maternal grandparents' house. His 80-year-old grandfather frequently scolded him for his gaming addiction, late-night outings, and disruptive behavior.

Yesterday afternoon, brooding over his grandfather's scolding, Thien siphoned petrol from a motorbike, fashioned it into a "bomb", lit it, and threw it into the house. The fire erupted fiercely, engulfing the residence. Thien then lay down in front of the door.
