On 12/8, Nghia Lo ward police in Quang Ngai province interviewed Huynh Kim Tuyen (a resident of Phuoc Giang commune) regarding her report that her brother, 34-year-old Huynh Thanh Tan, repeatedly hit her with a plastic chair.
The video of Tuyen being assaulted circulated on social media yesterday, attracting hundreds of thousands of views and comments, mostly condemning the brother's actions.
According to Tuyen, she has had disagreements with her family for over four years and has been living separately with her 7-year-old son. On the evening of 18/6, her 56-year-old mother and two brothers came to her rented room in Nghia Lo ward to persuade her to return home.
During the conversation, Tuyen and Tan disagreed and argued. Tan then reportedly insulted and assaulted his sister.
In the video, Tan asks Tuyen if she is sure her choice will bring her happiness, to which she replies, "Certainly". Tan immediately stands up, grabs a plastic chair, and hits her in the head three times while saying, "This is happiness". Their mother tries to intervene but is told to leave the room by Tan. The other brother does not physically assault Tuyen but at one point threatens her with a chair.
Tuyen stated that the incident lasted from 10 PM on 18/6 to 3 AM on 19/6. After the assault, she suffered a broken arm and required hospitalization. Tan has since gone to Ho Chi Minh City for work. "Initially, I wanted to resolve this privately, but now I see that's impossible, so I'm asking for legal intervention," she said.
Quang Ngai provincial police have directed ward police to investigate and take action if any violations are found.
