Aevin first earned the record for the world's largest afro with a circumference of 1.32 m and a height of 18.5 cm in 2010. This record brought fame to the New Orleans, Louisiana resident, establishing her as a symbol of natural beauty and ethnic pride.
Before embracing her natural hair, Aevin had chemically straightened it due to fear of discrimination. At age 20, she stopped straightening her hair to "return to herself". Her decision received support from her mother and grandmother, both of whom also have afros.

To maintain healthy hair growth, she follows a strict care regimen. Aevin regularly uses hot oil treatments, washes, and conditions her hair to prevent breakage. After washing, she typically styles her hair in two large buns to maintain its shape. "My biggest advice is to leave your hair alone," Aevin said.
Her enormous afro also presents some challenges. It often gets caught in tree branches and car doors, obstructs her vision while driving, and takes two days to wash and dry. She also frequently requests that people refrain from touching her hair without permission.

She held the record for nearly 10 years before Simone Williams (USA) broke it in 2020. Determined to reclaim the title, Aevin continued to grow her hair. In 9/2022, she surpassed her own previous record, achieving a circumference of 1.65 m and a height of 25 cm.
On 15/9, in celebration of World Afro Day, Guinness World Records (GWR) honored Aevin as an "icon" for her contributions to promoting natural beauty.
"I want young Black girls to know they are naturally beautiful. This hair is a symbol of the freedom to be yourself," she stated.
Michelle De Leon, founder of World Afro Day, shared, "Aevin's victory is a win for everyone who wants their natural hair celebrated".
For Aevin Dugas, the Guinness World Record represents more than personal recognition. She views her hair as an affirmation that true beauty starts with self-love.
