Quan, from Thanh Vinh ward, said his brother fell into the ditch while reaching for a toy. Seeing his brother struggling and sinking, Quan tried to pull him out but couldn't. He ran inside, shouting, "Grandma! Everyone! My brother fell into the ditch!"
His grandmother, 53-year-old Nguyen Thi Thuy, rushed out and pulled 2-year-old Huy from the water. He was pale and panicked. After a few moments, Huy calmed down and started crying.
Thuy said the incident happened around 7:10 PM on 5/9, in the ditch in front of their house. After days of rain, the water was deep for a child. "I thought the two were playing at their uncle's house next door, so I didn't notice. I'm so grateful that Quan was quick-witted enough to call for help; otherwise, I would have regretted it for the rest of my life," she said. Quan even urged her to take his brother to the hospital for a check-up.
Afterward, Thuy and others questioned Quan, suspecting he might have pushed his brother. Reviewing the security camera footage, everyone was surprised by the 4-year-old's quick thinking. Thuy believes it was instinctive since both boys have lived with her since they were young, while their parents work far away, and no one specifically taught him what to do.
Thuy added that Quan has seemed afraid of the ditch since the incident.
The video of Quan's actions has garnered tens of thousands of views and shares on social media. Many people expressed admiration, saying, "He's so young, yet so smart, perhaps even more so than some adults."
