Pilli Cortese, 55, found her smile fading when a restaurant staff member in Sardinia mistook her for the grandmother of 5-year-old Amelie. Despite her familiarity with such comments, she remained troubled by public criticism, which labeled her selfish for having a child in her fifties.
"I believe that refusing to have children just to enjoy personal leisure is what's truly selfish," Pilli asserted.
The love story of Pilli and Ross Lowe, 34, began with a chance encounter on a London street in 2014. At that time, Pilli was a 44-year-old director, separated and living with her youngest son, while Ross was a 23-year-old street artist. Their kindred spirits quickly bonded them. Three months later, they realized their 21-year age difference.
After three years together, Ross expressed his desire for children, prompting Pilli to set aside all worries and consider motherhood again. At 49, after two miscarriages, she realized her eggs were no longer viable. The couple decided to travel to Cyprus to undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF) using donor eggs.

The joy of pregnancy was short-lived, as Pilli faced a life-threatening situation upon discovering she was carrying twins. At her age, carrying both fetuses could endanger the lives of both mother and children. She was forced to undergo a procedure to remove one embryo to ensure the survival of the remaining child.
"I cried for the child I would never meet. I wanted to scream for the doctor to stop, but if I did, I would be taking away the chance of survival for both," she choked up.
In 11/2020, Amelie was born healthy, right after her mother's 50th birthday. While her physical strength was not as robust as her delivery 30 years prior, Pilli felt fortunate to have a devoted younger husband who shared all tasks, from changing diapers and doing housework to helping their child learn to walk.
When asked about her future at 70, Pilli faced it with calmness. "My mother gave birth to me at 42 and is still mentally sharp at 97. I am taking good care of myself to live every moment fully with my family," she said.
Currently, their remaining embryo had been donated to another infertile couple. Amelie now has a biological younger sister growing up healthy in Canada.
