Mr. Wang, 30, from Henan province, China, began a relationship with a woman in 2020 while they worked at the same factory. They became "online engaged" in 2023.
During this period, the woman repeatedly cited urgent reasons to ask Wang for money, such as: her mother needing surgery for a severe illness or her family being burdened with high-interest debt. Furthermore, a man claiming to be her brother also called, urging Wang to send money to "save his sister".
Trusting his girlfriend, Wang exhausted his savings and borrowed from various sources, transferring her a total of over one million yuan (approximately 3.8 billion Vietnamese dong).

Throughout their six-year relationship, Wang proposed meetings between their two families to discuss marriage five times, but the woman consistently found ways to postpone.
In early 2026, Wang decided to return to her hometown to meet her family during the Lunar New Year (Tet Nguyen dan). However, on the 4th day of Tet, she unexpectedly announced that her parents forbade the relationship, initiated a breakup, and cut off all contact.
Sensing something was amiss, Wang went to her family home himself. When he appeared and introduced himself as the woman's boyfriend of six years, her mother asked in astonishment, "You've never met us in six years? My daughter is already married, and my grandchildren are all in middle school."
It was only then that Wang realized he had been romantically deceived.
Wang's father was devastated upon learning his son had been deceived and was burdened with immense debt. "It felt like the sky was falling," he said, "but now I don't dare scold him; I'm just afraid he might do something rash."
Wang has taken all evidence of the money transfers to the local police, hoping to seek justice for himself.
