According to the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), asthma is a serious global health issue, affecting an estimated 300 million people worldwide and causing numerous deaths. In Vietnam, the average asthma prevalence is around 3.9% of the population, equivalent to approximately 4 million people. Notably, between 3,000 and 4,000 people die from this disease annually.
At the scientific conference "Responding to World Asthma Day 2025" organized by the Vietnam Respiratory Society, with the collaboration of GSK Vietnam, experts indicated that the management and prevention of asthma still face many challenges. This creates a burden for asthma patients in particular, as well as the healthcare system and society in general. Moreover, asthma, as an underlying condition, weakens the body's immunity and increases the risk of contracting viral diseases such as influenza or shingles. Dr. Le Thi Thu Huong, Head of the Respiratory Department at Gia Dinh People's Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, illustrated this: "People with asthma have a 24% higher risk of developing shingles and a 20% higher risk of postherpetic neuralgia. Notably, asthma patients have a more than 90% increased risk of developing ophthalmic shingles compared to those without asthma."
With advancements in medicine, scientists and doctors have gained a better understanding of the various biological causes of asthma. At the conference, Associate Professor Dr. Le Khac Bao, Deputy Director of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, emphasized that asthma control can be improved through personalized treatment. This requires a comprehensive strategy, including: assessing patient characteristics, monitoring adherence, and educating both patients and healthcare professionals to raise awareness.
In addition to treatment, preventive strategies play a key role in asthma management, helping to reduce infection-related asthma attacks and maintain lung function.
Professor Dr. Ngo Quy Chau, President of the Vietnam Respiratory Society, stated: "Effective asthma management is crucial for controlling complications and reducing asthma-related mortality. The Respiratory Society highly appreciates the collaborative efforts of all parties in improving the quality of life for asthma patients, contributing to reducing the burden on the healthcare system."
