Paraguay defeated Germany in the World Cup 2026 round of 32 on 29/6 following a penalty shootout. Goalkeeper Orlando Gill made five saves during 120 minutes and blocked two penalties, securing Paraguay's first advancement to the round of 16 since 2010.

Gill's journey to World Cup heroics followed a period of immense personal struggle. In late 2022, after marrying Melissa Avalos in 2021, their son Lautaro was born prematurely due to pregnancy complications. His wife required emergency surgery, and their son was admitted to intensive care, leaving the family financially drained. As the primary provider, Gill sold all his possessions, from clothes and shoes to sports equipment, to cover the medical expenses.

"My husband sold everything, even his national U20 jersey", his wife recounted.

His professional career, which had seen only three club appearances by 2025, began to turn around in late 2023 when he moved to San Lorenzo (Argentina) on loan. He was bought outright a year later and, by 2025, had secured a regular starting position. This consistent performance earned him a call-up to the Paraguay national team by coach Gustavo Alfaro.

Born in 2000, Orlando Daniel Gill Noldin initially played as a forward before transitioning to goalkeeper, leveraging his height of 1,98 m. He began honing his skills with renowned goalkeepers at 13 years old, developing through the national youth system. He participated in the U20 South American Championship in 2019 and made his first team debut for CS San Lorenzo in September 2020.

Gill cites Manuel Neuer, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, and Thibaut Courtois as his idols for their similar styles. He also studies the free-kick ability and leadership qualities of his compatriot, legendary goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert.

During the World Cup 2026, Gill faced criticism after Paraguay's 1-4 loss to USA in their opening match. However, he subsequently kept clean sheets in matches against Turkey and Australia. Following the USA defeat, he conceded only one goal while saving 16 of 17 shots on target.

After receiving the "Player of the Match" award for his performance against Germany, Gill dedicated the honor to his family. He also sent words of encouragement to his nephew, who is currently receiving treatment at home.
