The 42-year-old Indiana-based artist, Kat Von D, shared on her social media that she underwent 17 tattoo sessions totaling nearly 40 hours to achieve the blackout effect covering most of her limbs. Other tattoos, like a rose on her neck, are being removed with laser treatments.
She explained that many of her old tattoos were "marks from a darker time," serving as reminders of her past struggles with alcohol. Von D expressed feeling tired of seeing them every day and no longer wanting to carry those reminders.

She also affirmed her genuine appreciation for the aesthetic of blackout tattoos. "I find it satisfying to look down at my arm and see a clean slate," she said.
Von D has learned to ignore criticism. She acknowledges that social media tends to amplify negative voices, but believes individuals should learn not to let them have an impact. "What you consider ugly might be beautiful to someone else," she stated.

This transformation is part of a larger shift in Von D's life in recent years. She also left city life to move to rural Indiana with her husband and 5-year-old son.
Currently, Von D is primarily focused on music, a passion she set aside while building her cosmetics brand and filming a television show. "Music is my main focus now. We are getting ready to release a new album and then tour for a few months," she shared.
