"Even if labeled dishwasher-safe, nonstick pans are still exposed to conditions that degrade the coating faster than hand-washing," says Bernard Janssen, an expert with premium brands in the US.
He adds that this degradation isn't immediately noticeable, but over time, food will stick, making the pan difficult to use and clean.
When the coating is damaged, the pan can heat unevenly and may even flake, affecting food quality and safety. This is also a sign that it's time for a replacement.
How to clean nonstick pans correctly:
Carefully read the product's instructions. While some brands advertise their pans as dishwasher-safe, Janssen recommends hand-washing. "All nonstick coatings last longer with gentle handling," he says.
He advises avoiding high heat, letting the pan cool slightly before washing with warm water, mild soap, and a soft sponge.
For stuck-on food, Daniel Winer, co-founder and CEO of Hexclad, a US-based cookware company, suggests a mixture of baking soda and water.
If that doesn't work, soak the pan in warm, soapy water for 10-15 minutes, then wash with a soft sponge. He cautions against using metal scouring pads or harsh detergents, as these can damage the surface.

Choosing the right nonstick pan
Janssen points out that not all nonstick pans are created equal. The market offers numerous choices, from PFAS-free ceramic to traditional nonstick, Granitium ceramic, or stainless steel.
Winer recommends considering pans that combine stainless steel with a ceramic nonstick coating, offering both durability and versatility. These pans can even "re-season" the nonstick layer with natural fats from food.
Consumers should also pay attention to the composition, as some products may contain PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) or compounds like PTFE, aluminum, chromium, manganese, and nickel.
"By taking the time to research, you can choose the nonstick cookware that best suits your needs and lifestyle," Janssen concludes.
