Andy Harmer discovered his resemblance to David Beckham at 18 while working at a car wash in Eastbourne. A friend dyed his hair blond to enhance the likeness.
He sent a photo to a look-alike agency and was signed. In 1998, he began his 20-year career impersonating David Beckham.

Harmer's career skyrocketed when he began dating Camila, a Victoria Beckham look-alike. A management company paired them as "Posh and Becks," landing them on magazine covers and at events. The impersonation consumed their lives to the point Camila wore a wig in public to avoid attention.
At the height of Beckham's fame, Harmer booked three jobs a day, earning GBP 75,000 a year. He appeared in the 2002 film *Bend It Like Beckham*, promoted a football album in Japan, and even signed a record deal.
Beckham's life increasingly dictated Harmer's. His wardrobe consisted solely of sportswear, suits, and outfits mirroring the footballer. He maintained Beckham's physique and hairstyles. At events, conversations revolved around Beckham.
"I got caught up in the glamorous parties, drinking in rooms full of people scrutinizing me as Beckham," he said.

As Beckham's playing career waned, so did Harmer's work. Clients sought Messi and Ronaldo doubles. "What will I do without Beckham?" Harmer wondered at 36.
In 2015, he started a look-alike management company. But Harmer turned to alcohol, disillusioned with his own life. He became isolated and gained weight.
In 2023, he quit drinking. Eight months later, he survived a heart attack, a consequence of his earlier lifestyle.
Harmer no longer tries to emulate Beckham. He chooses his own hairstyles and clothes. Last year, he accepted a few Beckham impersonation jobs, but knew it was no longer his path.
"I've found myself again. Simply put, I prefer being Andy Harmer," he said.
