The biggest concern when using a bidet sprayer is the bacteria and viruses that can linger on the nozzle. In 2017, at a Japanese university hospital, 254 out of 292 toilets with bidet sprayers tested positive for infectious microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp., and Enterococcus spp.
According to a 2019 study of 268 women, frequent use of bidet sprayers can disrupt the beneficial microflora in the vagina.
Specifically, 42.86% of women who used bidet sprayers no longer had Lactobacillus, the bacteria that helps protect the vagina, while only 8.77% of the non-user group experienced this condition.

In addition, the study also found fecal bacteria present in 46 bidet users, compared to only 4 non-users. The 2019 study revealed that pregnant women in high-risk health groups had an increased chance of premature birth if they regularly used bidet sprayers.
However, most studies were conducted in hospital settings, where bidet sprayers are shared. Therefore, home use and regular cleaning can significantly reduce the risks.
According to experts, proper use of the bidet sprayer, regular cleaning of the device, and adjusting the spray pressure appropriately will significantly reduce health risks, while maintaining safe hygiene habits.
Tips for using bidet sprayers:
Cleanse from front to back: When spraying, direct the water stream from front to back. This helps limit bacteria from the anus from entering the urethra, reducing the risk of urinary tract infections, which can affect the kidneys, bladder, or urethra.
Clean and disinfect the bidet sprayer regularly: Regularly wiping the nozzle helps reduce the presence and spread of bacteria.
Be cautious with public bidet sprayers: Research shows that bacteria easily accumulate on shared bidet sprayers. Before use, wipe it clean with toilet paper or a disposable wipe.
Wipe clean after use: Never use a towel hanging near the bidet sprayer to wipe, as this towel may harbor bacteria. Use only clean toilet paper or a separate, clean towel.
