Teen swept away in river after accepting friend's challenge

A 19-year-old jumped into the fast-flowing Yamuna River and was swept away after accepting a 500 rupee (approximately 6 USD) bet from his friends.

The incident occurred on 4/9 on the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh state. A video shows Mohd Junaid, 19, climbing over a bridge railing and plunging into the murky floodwaters as his friends cheered.

The victim surfaced for a few seconds and tried to swim ashore, but the current carried him away. He quickly became exhausted and disappeared beneath the surface.

Police, divers, and the State Disaster Response Force launched a search operation, but Junaid remains missing. The rescue effort has been hampered by high water levels following days of heavy rain.

According to authorities, the bet arose while Junaid and his friends were playing by the river. The friends who encouraged him and filmed the incident will face charges.

"Such recklessness will not be tolerated," an official stated.
