The birds, one male and four females, weighing 190-250 grams, were handed over to authorities on 5/9. According to regulations, these birds are to be released back into the wild after being received. However, because all five were injured and immediate release could threaten their survival, the Department of Economic Affairs sought assistance from Con Dao National Park to care for and rehabilitate the birds before their release.

The Nicobar pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica) is found on small islands and coastal areas of the Nicobar Islands in the Indian Ocean. In Vietnam, the species, also known as the neck-feathered pigeon, white-tailed pigeon, or vulture pigeon, was recorded in Con Dao nearly 20 years ago. In November 2022, Con Dao National Park discovered them on Hon Bay Canh island.
As adults, these birds reach about 34 cm in length, with iridescent green feathers reflecting a copper sheen, black heads, and short tails tipped with white feathers. They typically forage on the ground in areas with leaf litter, primarily eating forest fruits, hard seeds, and invertebrates. They lay only one egg per breeding cycle, building simple nests from small twigs.
