At noon on 2/2, a gas cylinder explosion at a one-story house in Hamlet 4, Cam Trung commune, Ha Tinh province, resulted in the death of Thai Van Thuan, 44, and injuries to his son. The blast, which occurred in the kitchen, scattered furniture and left bloodstains on the floor and walls, with the roof of the kitchen area completely blown off.
Investigators examining the scene determined that Thuan and his son were cooking in the kitchen of their home, built approximately three years ago, when the incident occurred. The residential gas cylinder involved weighed about 13 kg.
According to local authorities, Thuan and his wife are fishermen and have three children. At the time of the explosion, their two elder children were not home. A commune official speculated on the cause, stating, "It's possible that while on the boat, saltwater seeped into the gas cylinder, causing it to oxidize, leading to a gas leak and explosion." Thuan occasionally transported the cylinder onto his boat for use during offshore trips.
