Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Bui Xuan Cuong announced this plan following a field inspection of the project.
The Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line is nearly 48 km long, with approximately 11,5 km passing through Ho Chi Minh City and over 36 km through Dong Nai. The entire line is expected to have 19 stations, including two underground stations and 17 elevated stations.
City leaders require station investments to align with passenger demand in each area and technical standards for suitable phasing. This aims to optimize operation, shorten travel times, enhance public transport access, and save costs.

TP HCM also tasked units with researching transit-oriented development (TOD) models near stations such as: Thu Thiem, Binh Trung, and Long Truong depot. This aims to efficiently use land and public infrastructure along the route. Additionally, the city will coordinate with Dong Nai to finalize the alignment, station locations, number of stations, and connecting infrastructure. This ensures synchronization with existing metro lines, railways, and Long Thanh Airport.
The Thu Thiem - Long Thanh line, initially planned as light rail, is now an urban railway. It is a key metro link connecting central TP HCM to Long Thanh Airport, utilizing the recently started Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem section.
Preliminary studies estimated the project's total capital at approximately VND 84,000 billion. TP HCM targets a construction start before 2/7 and completion by 2030.
Dai Quang Minh Real Estate Investment Joint Stock Company, a Thaco subsidiary, has proposed joining the project.

To expedite progress, city leaders urged all units to maximize resources for preparing, appraising, and approving the feasibility study report, including the overall front-end engineering design (FEED).
Technology options, rolling stock, power supply, and technical standards must also synchronize with the Ben Thanh - Tham Luong and Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem metro lines.
Beyond the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh line, Long Thanh Airport will also connect via the Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien metro extension through Dong Nai and the North - South high-speed railway. Pending these projects, several road and bus routes from TP HCM to the airport are undergoing investment and upgrades.
