Man who damaged Nguyen dynasty golden throne national treasure sentenced to over 3 years in prison

Ho Van Phuong Tam, 43, used his hands to break the Nguyen dynasty golden throne, a national treasure, into multiple pieces inside Thai Hoa Palace.

On 9/7, the Regional People's Court 2 sentenced Ho Van Phuong Tam, 43, of Kim Long ward, to 3 years and 6 months in prison for intentional destruction of property.

According to the indictment, at approximately 11:55 am on 24/5/2025, Tam purchased a ticket to visit the Hue Imperial Citadel. Upon reaching Thai Hoa Palace, the defendant climbed over the protective barrier, sat on the Nguyen dynasty golden throne, and used his hands to break off the front left armrest, continuing to smash it into many pieces. After about 15 minutes, security personnel apprehended Tam and handed him over to the police for processing.

An appraisal determined the minimum cost to restore the damaged artifact was over 173.2 million VND. The appraisal council also stated that the historical, cultural, and spiritual losses to the national treasure are immeasurable in monetary terms.

During the investigation, authorities determined that at the time of the crime, Tam suffered from severe mental disorder due to prolonged methamphetamine use, leading to a loss of awareness and behavioral control. However, according to the Penal Code, the loss of awareness resulting from voluntary illegal drug use means the defendant is still criminally liable.

Following a period of mandatory treatment, a new forensic assessment concluded that the defendant's ability to perceive and control his actions was only partially impaired.

At the trial, the judging panel noted that the defendant's actions damaged a national treasure, significantly impacting the preservation of national cultural heritage.

The Nguyen dynasty golden throne, located in Thai Hoa Palace, is a unique artifact of significant historical and cultural value. The throne measures 101 cm high, 72 cm wide, and 87 cm long. Its base is 118 cm long, 90 cm wide, and 20 cm high. Above the throne is a magnificent gilded canopy. All components are made of lacquered and gilded wood. In 1/2016, the golden throne was recognized as a national treasure.
