Around 3 h on 29/8, a multi-vehicle incident involving seven cars took place on the Phan Thiet - Dau Giay expressway, specifically in the Song Phan commune section, as traffic moved from Ho Chi Minh City towards Phan Thiet.
The chain collision began when a Can Tho-plated car rear-ended a Hanoi-plated pickup truck traveling ahead. Subsequently, five more cars collided in succession, resulting in damage to the front and rear of multiple vehicles.
At the accident site, the vehicles were tightly packed, occupying the lane next to the median strip. This forced traffic heading from Ho Chi Minh City to Phan Thiet to merge into the remaining lane, causing slow movement.
"Traffic is very heavy today, and with the damaged vehicles blocking one lane, vehicles must slow down to ensure safety", said Nguyen Chi Trung, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City traveling to Phan Thiet with his family.
Traffic police (CSGT) coordinated with the expressway management unit to direct traffic. They also brought rescue vehicles to clear the scene and investigate the cause of the accident.

The collision occurred on the first day of the September 2nd holiday, which saw a significant increase in vehicle traffic from Ho Chi Minh City and southern provinces heading to popular destinations like Phan Thiet, Nha Trang, and the Central region. This surge in travel led to heavy congestion on several expressways.
At certain times, CSGT and management units temporarily closed expressway entrances, redirecting vehicles to National Route 1 to alleviate congestion. Earlier in the morning, the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway experienced congestion stretching over 10 km.

The Phan Thiet - Dau Giay expressway spans 99 km, with a total investment exceeding 12,500 ty dong, and has been operational since 4/2023. It is one of five expressway sections connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Nha Trang, alongside the Ho Chi Minh City - Dau Giay, Vinh Hao - Phan Thiet, Cam Lam - Vinh Hao, and Nha Trang - Cam Lam routes. The entire route reduces travel time between the two cities to approximately 4-5 hours by car.
