Traffic disruption at eastern gateway to Ho Chi Minh City

The right turn from Pham Van Dong Street to Binh Trieu Bridge has been closed, causing confusion and long tailbacks at the eastern gateway to Ho Chi Minh City.

On the afternoon of 9/9, many drivers crossing Binh Loi Bridge on Pham Van Dong Street were surprised to find the right turn towards Binh Trieu 2 Bridge blocked by a concrete median. They were forced to detour nearly 1 km to the intersection of Pham Van Dong Street and Street Number 20 to make a U-turn. Heavy rain at the same time caused extended congestion on both Pham Van Dong Street and National Highway 13.

A representative of the Hang Xanh Traffic Police team, belonging to the Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Police Department, said the closure is being tested by relevant units to disperse traffic flow towards Binh Trieu 2 Bridge, which has experienced frequent congestion since Binh Trieu 1 Bridge, running parallel to it, was closed to cars over a week ago for clearance improvement work. This closure has not been widely publicized as it is still in the trial phase. The authorities continue to monitor the situation and will implement appropriate solutions.

Binh Trieu 1 Bridge was closed to cars for clearance work beginning on 26/8, diverting traffic to Binh Trieu 2 Bridge. However, as this is a major traffic artery connecting National Highway 13 and Pham Van Dong Street to the city center, severe congestion has occurred in recent days. The construction work on Binh Trieu 1 Bridge is expected to be completed by the end of November.

Currently, in addition to Binh Trieu Bridge, vehicles from Binh Duong, Thu Duc, and Go Vap (former district) in the northeast gateway to the city have other routes into the city center, including Nguyen Xi, Phan Van Tri, and Kha Van Can streets. However, these alternatives require significant detours for those coming from National Highway 13.
