Sio was hospitalized in critical condition after Jocelyn Camarillo knocked her out at the 78-second mark of the opening bout at the ProBox TV event, held at the National Orange Show Event Center in San Bernardino on 21/3. The 19-year-old fighter was cornered, enduring a series of blows to the head before collapsing to the canvas, completely unconscious.

The match was immediately stopped. Medical personnel promptly intervened, removing Sio from the ring on a stretcher. Many reported she exhibited seizures during transport to the emergency room, indicating severe neurological trauma.
Sio was transferred to Loma Linda University Medical Center, a leading regional emergency hospital. There, doctors decided to place her in a medically induced coma and use a ventilator to stabilize her condition. This measure is common in severe traumatic brain injury cases to reduce pressure on the brain and limit widespread damage.
After more than a day of intensive treatment, Sio's condition improved significantly. An announcement from her family and team confirmed she has been taken out of the coma, no longer requires a ventilator, and can breathe independently. However, the young boxer remains under observation in the intensive care unit (ICU), monitored by three specialist teams.
"Sio is disciplined and always carefully considers each fighting decision," her team stated, affirming that the decision to fight Camarillo was thoroughly evaluated beforehand.
Sio's opponent, Camarillo, also expressed relief upon learning of her rival's recovery. The American fighter posted on social media that she was praying for her opponent's full recovery. Immediately after the fight, Camarillo initially celebrated her victory but quickly knelt upon realizing the severity of the situation.
The incident drew attention because Sio is young and only began her professional career in 9/2025. Her current record stands at one win and three losses, with her two most recent defeats ending early. Before facing Camarillo, Sio was knocked out and unconscious in 1/2026, though her team stated that blow was to the liver area, not a head injury.
Experts are concerned about a young boxer sustaining two knockout losses in a short period. Sio's team, however, asserted she fully complied with medical regulations, including a 45-day rest period and health checks before returning to competition.
This knockout is considered significantly more severe. Sio's immediate unconsciousness and reported seizures raised concerns about the risk of long-term brain damage. In boxing, such situations are often classified as severe injuries, requiring extended monitoring even after the patient regains consciousness.
While no detailed diagnosis has been released, Sio's awakening after more than a day is seen as a positive sign. According to doctors, the first 24 to 48 hours following a traumatic brain injury are critical, largely determining the prognosis for recovery.
