Alcaraz surpasses 'Big 3' in Grand Slam record

Carlos Alcaraz makes history with the best 100-match Grand Slam record, defeating Corentin Moutet 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 in the Australian Open third round.

In his first 100 Grand Slam matches, Alcaraz has won 87, matching the record set by tennis legend Bjorn Borg. This achievement places Alcaraz ahead of the "Big 3" in this particular statistic, as well as surpassing legend John McEnroe.

John McEnroe and Rafael Nadal share the second-best win-loss record in their first 100 Grand Slam matches at 86-14. Roger Federer's record stands at 80-20, while Novak Djokovic holds a 79-21 record for his initial 100 Grand Slam appearances.

Jannik Sinner played his 100th Grand Slam match in last year's Wimbledon final, where he defeated Alcaraz. Sinner's record after 100 matches is 81-19, which is better than both Federer and Djokovic.

At age 22, Alcaraz has already secured 6 major titles and is now pursuing another record in Melbourne: becoming the youngest player to complete a career Grand Slam by collecting all four major titles. The Australian Open was also Alcaraz's first Grand Slam appearance four years ago. He has yet to progress beyond the quarterfinals at this tournament.

Alcaraz's third-round match against Moutet resembled a drop shot competition. "At one point, towards the end of the third set, I told my team I wasn't going to chase another drop shot", Alcaraz said after the match on 23/1. "Honestly, I was tired of rushing to the net. I looked up at the screen and thought, 'I've come to the net about 55 times like this.' I think we were competing to see who was better at drop shots, but he definitely won".

Drop shots appeared early in the match from both Moutet and Alcaraz, leading both players into a "cat and mouse" game at the net. However, while Moutet's strengths lay in his varied play and good movement, Alcaraz proved to be more well-rounded, easily dominating all three sets.

Alcaraz's next opponent is 19th seed Tommy Paul, who advanced after Alejandro Davidovich Fokina retired while the American was leading 6-1, 6-1. The Spanish player had to receive assistance from a physical therapist for an issue with his left leg in the second set. Alcaraz currently leads Paul with a 5-2 head-to-head record.

"Playing against Paul is always enjoyable and challenging", Alcaraz said of his opponent, who also has an undefeated set record like himself. "We often deliver many great matches. On hard courts, he plays excellent, aggressive, and technical tennis. I will face many challenges".
