Barca earns big from Spanish Super Cup

The Spanish Super Cup offers significantly larger prize money than the European Super Cup, despite the latter being considered more prestigious.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barca earned 11 million USD from the 2025-2026 Spanish Super Cup. This sum included 7 million USD for participation, 1,6 million USD for their semi-final victory against Athletic Bilbao, and 2,4 million USD for defeating Real Madrid in the final.

Real Madrid received 8,6 million USD, comprising 7 million USD for participation and 1,6 million USD for their semi-final win against Atletico Madrid. Atletico Madrid earned 3,3 million USD, while Athletic Bilbao received 2 million USD, both solely from participation. These varying participation fees reflect differences in team popularity and audience appeal.

The Spanish Super Cup typically features the top two teams from La Liga and the two finalists of the Copa del Rey. As Barca and Real Madrid secured all four of these spots last season, the Super Cup organizers extended invitations to two additional teams from the La Liga top 4: Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao. In the semi-finals, Barca defeated Athletic Bilbao 5-0, and Real Madrid overcame Atletico Madrid 2-1. The final, held on the evening of 11/1, saw Barca triumph over Real Madrid with a 3-2 score.

In terms of prestige, the Spanish Super Cup holds a lower standing than the European Super Cup, which is contested between the champions of the Champions League and the Europa League. However, the winner of the European Super Cup in August 2025, PSG, earned only 5,8 million USD, while runner-up Tottenham received 4,7 million USD.

The Spanish Super Cup's higher prize money stems from its organization in Saudi Arabia, a nation willing to invest heavily in football. Beyond the 24,9 million USD in prize money distributed among the four participating teams, Saudi Arabia also provides a similar sum to the Spanish Football Federation. This Asian nation similarly hosts the Italian Super Cup.

Under the current contract, Saudi Arabia is slated to host the Spanish Super Cup until 2030. However, next year's tournament might need to be held in Qatar or Kuwait, as Saudi Arabia will be hosting the Asian Championship concurrently.
