Prior to this match, coach Vincent Kompany's unbeaten run showed signs of faltering, as Bayern drew with Union Berlin in the Bundesliga and then lost to Arsenal in the Champions League. Sandwiched between these two matches was a dominant win over Freiburg, but compared to the team that had won all 16 opening matches of the season, the Bavarians had lost momentum. The loss to Arsenal also led to a slow start against St Pauli.
Bayern was shocked in the 6th minute, following a turnover by right-back Konrad Laimer, who had been consistently performing since the start of the season. Midfielder Mathias Pereira Lage seized the ball, threading a pass to striker Andreas Hountondji, who broke free and shot into the near corner to open the scoring. 39-year-old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer could have done better in this situation by closing down the angle.
Kompany's side equalized with one goal in the 44th minute. From a long ball by center-back Kim Min-jae from midfield into the penalty area, Luis Diaz broke free but was challenged and fell. The Colombian forward managed to backheel the ball to Raphael Guerreiro, who fired it into the top corner to score.
It wasn't until the third minute of second-half stoppage time that Bayern took the lead. From a cross by Joshua Kimmich on the right, Diaz got free and headed home from close range unmarked.
