Can Tho experiences hot and humid conditions for VnExpress Marathon

The VnExpress Marathon Can Tho 2026 is scheduled for 10/5, with temperatures expected to range from 27-32 degrees C, posing an early summer challenge for runners.

According to AccuWeather, the weather in Tay Do (Can Tho) during the race week will maintain high temperatures. This is characteristic of the early rainy season in the Southwest region. On 8-9/5, the period for item collection and pre-race interactions, maximum temperatures could reach 36 degrees C, with lows of 27-28 degrees C. The probability of rain is around 55%, mainly in the late afternoon, accompanied by high humidity and dense cloud cover, creating a muggy atmosphere.

On race day, 10/5, temperatures are forecast to rise to 37 degrees C by midday. However, due to heat effects and high humidity, the real-feel temperature outdoors could reach 43 degrees C. The ultraviolet index is projected to hit 12, a level harmful to skin and eyes. Cloud cover on race day is expected to remain low (20-25%), meaning participants will compete under direct, intense sunlight from early morning.

Marathon athletes starting at 3h will have an advantage during the first two to three hours when temperatures are still low. However, from around 7h, temperatures will rise rapidly, making the latter part of the race more challenging, especially for those with longer finish times.

In hot and humid conditions, the body increases sweat production for cooling, leading to rapid dehydration and electrolyte loss. Blood then rushes to the skin for heat dissipation, reducing blood supply to muscles, causing a faster heart rate and decreased speed. Without proper intensity control, athletes are prone to issues such as cramps, exhaustion, or heat stroke.

Experts advise athletes to adopt a safe race strategy: reduce pace compared to initial goals, maintain a steady rhythm, and listen to their bodies. Early and regular hydration and electrolyte replenishment are essential at aid stations every 1,5-2 km. Using ice to cool the neck, nape, and wrists can also help lower body temperature quickly.

Besides strategy, race apparel is vital for health protection. Runners should choose light-colored, thin, breathable athletic tank tops to minimize heat absorption. Using caps, sunglasses, and sports sunscreen will help reduce the negative effects of ultraviolet rays. After crossing the finish line, athletes need to rest in the shade, rehydrate slowly, and avoid pouring ice water directly on their heads to prevent sudden vasoconstriction.

The VnExpress Marathon first came to Tay Do in 2025, attracting over 9,000 people, making it one of the largest sports events in the Southwest region. This year, the race returns with new dates, a modified course, and enhanced race experiences, attracting 10,000 registered athletes.

Beyond competing, runners visiting Can Tho can combine their trip with tourism, exploring destinations such as Cai Rang floating market, Ninh Kieu wharf, or local fruit orchards. The development of sports tourism through the race is helping Tay Do shape its identity as a dynamic young city where the spirit of sport blends with riverine life.
