During a press conference ahead of their second premier league match against Ipswich Town, Carrick faced continued questioning regarding Man Utd's 0-2 opening day loss to newly promoted Hull City. Reporters asked the English manager if captain Bruno Fernandes and Youri Tielemans, the Belgium national team captain, displayed sufficient leadership to alter the game's outcome.

“It was just one game. I believe our dressing room has enough leaders to sustain that throughout the season,” he replied. “Our losing one game does not mean the reason lies in leadership ability. After the match, many people said the team lacked passion. But the issue is not just that. When you concede from two set-piece situations, the game changes.”

Carrick rejected viewing Man Utd’s defeat in black and white terms. When pressed for a specific cause, the 45-year-old manager expressed frustration, asserting that a team's loss does not imply everything has gone wrong. “I think it’s easy and lazy to say that when a team loses, everything is wrong: this is wrong, that is wrong, not enough effort, not enough passion. That is like the most obvious answer,” he stated.

According to Carrick, football is far more complex than a simple equation between results and performance. A match can be decided by numerous details, and sometimes just a few moments are enough for a team to lose.

He emphasized that the score should not be the sole measure of a team’s quality. Carrick highlighted a clear contrast: Man Utd played with a similar approach in some matches and won 1-0, leading to immediate positive evaluations. Therefore, when analyzing a defeat, Carrick believes one cannot simply reverse the praise given after a victory.

“We have to dig deeper, understand the details in the game. And when we win some games, we also do not get too excited because we know the team is not perfect yet,” the English manager expressed.

For their second round match today, Man Utd faces another newcomer, Ipswich Town, who defeated Sunderland 2-1 in their opening fixture. Carrick does not consider Ipswich an easy opponent and warned that Man Utd would face a different challenge. He also stressed that playing at Old Trafford, with crowd support, makes the objective clearer. Man Utd needs to improve results and regain a positive playing spirit after a disappointing opening match.

Man Utd will be without Carlos Baleba for the Ipswich match. The Cameroonian midfielder, who joined for 95 million USD from Brighton, has an ankle injury and could be out for at least three weeks. This means Baleba is likely to debut for Man Utd when Tottenham visits on 10/10, after the international break.
